When giving your heart away is not about Love

I wrote this song while practicing as a doctor, prior to my foray into music. At that time, I used to see several patients with end-stage heart disease. For some of them, a heart transplant (which is the transfer of heart from a brain-dead person we call as donor) remains the only hope for survival. Unfortunately, heart transplant rates remain abysmally low in our country due to several reasons (a discussion for a later date). On the bright side however, friends in my Institute’s organ transplant unit would narrate stories of acts of compassion and courage by relatives of donors. Many of these would include conversations the relatives had had with the unfortunate victims during their lifetime, mentioning how they had already pledged to donate in the event of death.
This song is an ode to this selfless act. It is written from point of view of the donor, a victim of a surfing accident.
My Heart Beats for Thee
Verse (V) 1
My heart’s been my friend and my guide
It taught me to follow what’s always right
When it saw your yearning, felt your pain
It told me, it’ll never be with me again
Voices screamed, my brain tugged hard,
But my heart floated away, on its chosen path
Chorus (C)
Cause though it’s always been with me
Your calling made it long to be free
My heart once made me live, and now it beats for thee!
V2
I had a strange dream, as a young child
Was riding the waters, into the wild
My brain woke me and warned, you will drown
But my little heart, it egged me on
The dream ended, but gave me the sign
A surfer I became, it worked out fine
C
Cause though it’s always been with me
Your calling made it long to be free
My heart once made me live, and now beats for thee!
V3
I skimmed the surface, kissed the waves
I twisted and created, mind bending caves
And though a crash it was, after each tryst
My heart always made me look over the mist
Never leaving my side, never one to cheat
Till I performed that last, impossible feat
C (I ask the heart)
I thought you would always be with me
Keep me young, wild and free
Then why can’t this friendship last, till eternity
V4 (the heart replies)
I am like your soul, that served you well
Why would I now wish for eternal rest?
If its your time to go, pardon me
Cause I could still reside in another’s breast
So honour your right, and help wipe another’s tear
Go make the pledge, and do not fear
C
Cause though it’s always been with me
Your calling made it long to be free
My heart once made me live, and now beats for thee
